Eclectro podcast #15 – BLACK GIRL/WHITE GIRL

Podcast Teaser

Can you give a short introduction of who you girls are?

Of course! We’re BLACK GIRL/WHITE GIRL, a DJ & production duo currently residing in Tel Aviv, Israel. Sometimes we call Amsterdam home too. It just depends on where life takes us, really. Our real names are Karin and Tahnee, by the way. Nice to meet you!

Your name as artists seems rather obvious. How and when did you girls team up? Why did you decide to collaborate?

It does, doesn’t it? Actually, we didn’t think too much about the name (the inspiration came from a song by Kill Frenzy), just like we didn’t have to think long and hard about the decision to work together. We just met a little over a year ago in Amsterdam and were inseparable ever since. When personalities align like ours did, there’s no point to fight it or ask why. You just follow through.

BLACK GIRL/WHITE GIRL seem to be a story of two kindred spirits teaming up in their commonly interest of music and lifestyle. How did you seem to manage to fit your separate musical background?

Well, Tahnee was born on Curacao and Karin in Israel. That’s a huge cultural difference, for starters. The only thing the Middle East has in common with the Caribbean is the heat and the lovely, warm people. While we were raised on opposite sides of the world, the music we grew up with was basically the same. We belong to the generation of music television. Luckily both of us also diverged from this path to discover leftfield sounds during our formative years. It got us to where we are today. Gazing towards the future, but unafraid to look back and boldly reach out to musical artifacts that remind us of our childhood.

How do you feel your different backgrounds translate themselves in your music nowadays?

We’re just open to all kinds of music. It’s important to keep an open mind. Not just as an artist, but for everybody, really. It tends to broaden your world view and make you less superficial, which is always a good thing in our book.

We had the pleasure of having BLACK GIRL/WHITE GIRL contributing to our podcast-series. What can the followers expect of it?

When we create something, whether it’s a track or a mix, we focus on mirroring our emotions. In every case, we really just want to tell you a story. As a species, the human being loves to categorize and sort out everything around him. As artists we try to refrain from doing so. We love to incorporate the element of surprise, or a plot twist, if you will, in our creations. Our music forces you to consider dramatic twists and turns, plunge into great depths, only to emerge in a world totally different than the one you were in before.

What can we expect of BLACK GIRL/WHITE GIRL in the near future? And what plans and goals do you have for the following years?

In the past weeks or so we’ve noticed that our project is starting to gain a considerable amount of momentum and attention, up to the point that we’re getting 2 – 3 request for exclusive mixes per week.  Of course that’s totally undoable, so we need to start being selective. Nevertheless, for the near future you can expect a lot of new music from us, for starters. We just released an original track (which uses vocals from a 90’s jam) called ‘Believe U (Turn It Around)’. It’s very deep, with huge keys and warm, soulful vibes.

Our goal is to keep creating music like that, stuff that we really love. At the moment we’re working hard on our first EP, for which we haven’t set a release date yet.  We really want it to be exactly like it’s sounding in our heads. We believe we can afford ourselves to take the time to make something truly outstanding and unique. Also, we’re still looking for vocalists to work with, so we need some time to allow that to come to fruition as well. Our long term goal is to build a sustainable career doing this thing we love so much. And in the mean time we’ll also be doing some exclusive shows in 2014.

At what spots can the people see you perform in the coming weeks?

In the next two months we will be doing a few selective performances in Tel Aviv. There’s also some stuff being set up in the UK and The Netherlands in the near future. When the time comes all of this will be revealed through our social media, so stay tuned for more details on that.

Any final words for our readers before we hit that play-button below?

We want to thank everyone who’s been supporting us, we hope we’ll continue to make you proud. Also, remember that music is about opening your mind and your soul in the first place. Do this and your ears will willingly follow. One love y’all!
