De Balance mix-albums gelden al enkele jaren als een vrijwaring voor dj’s om andere paden te bewandelen dan dat ze tot dan toe deden. En voor de veertiende in de rij treedt Joris Voorn aan en ook hij heeft besloten om er geen conventioneel mixalbum van te maken. Op z’n MySpace legt Joris uit wat hij precies voor ogen had met dit album. Verven met geluid in plaats van de bekende djmix-paden bewandelen werd uiteindelijk, na een aantal mislukte mixsessies voor het album het credo. En het resultaat van die verfsessies is toch wel opmerkelijk te noemen. Ik denk dat het verstandig is om nu vast de tracklist te laten zien; je begrijpt dan ongetwijfeld meteen wat voor schilderijen, schetsen en tekeningen Joris Voorn heeft gemaakt:

Grensverleggend?
Overigens moet je nu niet denken dat deze twee mixen uren gaan duren; voor het maken van de ’tracks’ (die soms uit wel 6 nummers zijn opgebouwd) heeft Voorn soms ook alleen een intro gebruikt of een bepaalde loop of break van een nummer. En knap is het, als je dan op die manier meer dan 100 nummers kunt samensmeden tot 2 mixen en je combinaties kunt maken tussen Goldie, Leftfield, Jimpster, Aphex Twin, Dubfire, System 7, Minilogue, Carl Craig en Flying Lotus. (om er zo maar eens een paar te noemen).

Joris Voorn verlegt met dit album niet alleen z’n technische grenzen maar vooral ook zijn muzikale en artistieke focus. Maar, zegt Joris op MySpace, er zullen ongetwijfeld mensen zijn die toch nog enigzins verbaasd zijn en het wellicht niet kunnen waarderen. Voornfans van het eerste uur daarentegen zullen er reikhalzend naar uitkijken aangezien de FUSE mix uit 2005 ook al dergelijke structuren bevatte.

Overigens heeft Richie Hawtin in dat zelfde jaar met ‘DE:9 Transitions’ ook al een soortgelijk album uitgebracht en in een recent interview met LiveSets.com doet Joris Voorn daar, in relatie met Balance 014 nog een interessante uitspraak over: “No offence, but I am a little surprised that, in this digital age of endless possibilities and almost 4 years after Richie’s DE:9 Transitions, that is still the only reference people can find. Why is nobody else embracing the digital tools that allow us to do so much more than the ancient turntables and mixer…?” (en zou hij dan ook die visionaire Amazon reageerder zijn..?)

Met Balance 014 poetst Voorn dus een oud concept op en getild naar een hoger niveau levert dat een vernieuwende dj-mix op die minder rust op de kracht van de individuele tracks en meer op het geheel. Ik heb helaas het album nog niet gehoord (9 maart is de release gepland) maar ik ben inmiddels erg nieuwsgierig naar zowel het album als naar wat de Eclectro-bezoeker van het concept voor Balance 014 én van bovenstaande uitspraak vindt.

Op vrijdag 13 maart staat de Nederlandse albumrelease gepland tijdens Onlytechno! in de Broerenkerk in Zwolle. En met een eindtijd van 04.00 uur en ook nog een set Steve Rachmad zul je er vroeg bij moeten zijn dit keer.
