Het online kosteloos aanbieden van elektronische muziek blijft een onderwerp dat de gemoederen bezighoudt op Eclectro. Belangenorganisatie Buma-Stemra heeft het liever niet, Qbical heeft er gemengde gevoelens bij, hele volksmassa’s zweren erbij, en ook op Eclectro geloven we erin – mits de verantwoordelijke auteurs het ermee eens zijn.

Een partij die nog niet aan het woord is geweest, is het kleine, onafhankelijke label. Uiteindelijk zijn zij de mensen die het van de verkoop moeten hebben, want veel van hun artiesten leveren te weinig op qua optredens of merchandise om het hoofd boven water te houden. Eclectro vroeg daarom Sonia van het Britse breakbeatlabel Botchit & Scarper en tegenwoordig eigenaar van het promotiekantoor Push Promotion om haar visie op de downloadcultuur.

The music industry is suffering due to downloading free music, burning friend’s cds, cherry picking tracks from albums and only buying them. We all do it, it’s too tempting, but the smaller independent labels are really felling the pressure.

I manage Botchit & Scarper records and true, in the ‘good old days’ when we posted vinyl out, it cost us a lot, compared to how it is now: posting cd’s, sending links and the new digital age etc.

But what worries me is when an artist creates an album and the sales are so bad and the label can barely make the money back that was spent on promotion and manufacturing. Where will this leave music in the future? Will all labels play a smaller part and the myspace age take over? Will music become so freely available that it becomes worthless? All these free cds on magazines, how many get thrown away?

I’m also a recording artist, SOTO, and have seen singles sales go down. Vinyl is really down,  which is a real shame. Vinyl sounds warmer, you appreciate the artwork and I know I’d rather  have that framed on my wall, in my collection in years to come and look back at.  You really do it for the love, because it certainly ain’t for the money, but you do get to travel and tour, dj’ing which of course brings in money.

So what does the future hold? Probably no vinyl, no labels and music released via myspace type sites and albums released free with mags and papers!
